Ingredients

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 2–3 tablespoons sour cream or plain Greek yogurt (for creaminess)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice or apple cider vinegar (for brightness)
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional, for depth)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4–1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Fresh herbs: chives, parsley, dill, or cilantro (1–2 tablespoons, finely chopped)
  • Shredded cheese: sharp cheddar, parmesan, or pepper jack (1/2–3/4 cup)
  • Heat and tang: hot sauce, sriracha, or canned diced green chiles (1–3 teaspoons)
  • Sweet notes: honey or maple syrup (1–2 teaspoons), plus a pinch of cinnamon for a sweet variation
  • Umami boosters: Worcestershire sauce (1/2–1 teaspoon), soy sauce (1/2 teaspoon), or miso (1 teaspoon)
  • Texture: chopped scallions, roasted red peppers, olives, jalapeños, or bacon bits (2–4 tablespoons)
  • Olive oil drizzle for richness
  • Paprika, everything bagel seasoning, or extra herbs for garnish
  • Crackers, crostini, pretzels, and sliced veggies for serving

Method

  1. Soften the cream cheese: Leave it at room temperature for 20–30 minutes, or microwave in 5–10 second bursts until easily spreadable.
  2. Blend the base: In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese with sour cream or yogurt, lemon juice, and Dijon until smooth. A hand mixer makes this easier, but a sturdy spoon works.
  3. Season: Add garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well and taste. Adjust salt, acidity, or heat to your liking.
  4. Customize: Fold in your chosen mix-ins. For savory depth, try shredded cheddar and chives. For a spicy kick, add hot sauce and jalapeños. For a sweet twist, add honey and cinnamon.
  5. Chill (optional but recommended): Cover and refrigerate for 30–60 minutes. This helps flavors meld and the texture set.
  6. Garnish and serve: Drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with paprika or herbs, and serve with sturdy crackers or crisp veggies.
