Chocolate Greek Yogurt Ice Cream: Easy, Healthy & High-Protein Recipe - Creamy Treat You Can Make at Home

Prep Time 10 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes
Servings: 6 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 cups plain 2% or full-fat Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/3 to 1/2 cup liquid sweetener (maple syrup, honey, or agave), to taste
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 2–4 tablespoons milk of choice (dairy or unsweetened almond/oat) to loosen, as needed
  • Optional: 1 scoop (25–30 g) chocolate or vanilla whey/casein protein powder
  • Optional add-ins: 2 tablespoons mini chocolate chips, chopped dark chocolate, or cacao nibs

Method

  1. Whisk the base. In a bowl, whisk Greek yogurt, cocoa powder, sweetener, vanilla, and salt until smooth. If using protein powder, whisk it in. Add 1–2 tablespoons milk if the mixture is too thick to blend.
  2. Taste and adjust. Add more sweetener for a sweeter finish or more cocoa for a darker chocolate taste. Remember, flavors dull slightly once frozen, so aim a touch sweeter than you think.
  3. Blend for silkiness. Transfer to a blender or use an immersion blender. Blend 20–30 seconds to fully smooth and aerate. This improves texture and scoopability.
  4. Fold in mix-ins (optional). Stir in mini chips or cacao nibs for crunch.
  5. Chill the mixture. Cover and refrigerate 30–60 minutes. A colder base freezes faster and creamier.
  6. Freeze. Spread into a shallow, freezer-safe container. Press a piece of parchment directly on the surface to reduce ice crystals. Freeze 2–3 hours for soft-serve texture.
  7. For a firmer scoop. Freeze 4–6 hours. Before serving, let the container sit at room temp 10–15 minutes, then scoop.
